FERAZ's HUNGARIAN INTERVIEW
After winning a comedy competition in Budapest, Hungary Feraz got an interview published in a local magazine called Funzine. Every kid dreams of being a Hungarian superstar, he just got lucky enough to have a small taste of it...

What brought you to Budapest?
I’m on an exchange programme, studying political science. It was me who picked Budapest. Initially, it started off because I’m poor (he laughs, ed.), but then the more I looked into Budapest, the better it looked. It’s very different from California. The biggest difference is probably the public transport, which actually workshere, or rather, it exists. In California, no one uses it; they’re just too lazy to walk even two blocks. It’s cars for everything.
What will you miss from Budapest?
Other than Gulyás? I’d say the layout of the city.
What was your biggest cultural shock here?
Probably how little people speak English. For example, the old lady didn’t speak any English in my hostel, so I needed to act and draw that I needed a pillow, but the amazing thing was how she was willing to engage in this kind of weird Pictionary with me.
Has the city featured in your stand-up material?
Yeah. I talk about Hungary, but not too much yet. There’s one little joke about the number of locks on doors… the number of locks on Hungarian doors confuses me. One or two locks make you feel safe, but six?! What could be out there?
What do you think about Hungarian humor?
It’s very hard to say, from what I’ve experienced so far, I can see differences between European and American humor. When I perform at a new place, I can never be sure what issues I might touch upon that just shouldn’t be touched upon… I had to rearrange my sets for an American bunch of college kids drinking beer and make them less vulgar to fit people sipping wine at nice tables in Europe. I’m not yet familiar with the boundaries here, so I prefer to stay on the safe side.
Who are your fave comedians?
I’d say my favorites are Louis C.K, Dave Chapelle and Greg Giraldo. They are very different from each other and they influence me in different ways. Louis C. K. is much dirtier, I’d say more shocking. He says things that some people can’t stomach but he puts it all out there, but if you’ve got a good enough sense of humor you can deal with it. Dave Chapelle is very creative, he mixes white and black comedy really well, crosses racial barriers Greg Giraldo is a very intelligent guy. He talks more about real issues in the world; he makes fun of a lot of stuff going on, makes fun of the American culture, things like the obesity epidemic or the lack of geographical education.
Do you think comedy is a good medium to raise awareness regarding these issues?
Definitely.
